Perhaps the biggest concern in cyber security is the protection of infrastructure. This concern was exemplified by viruses such as Stuxnet (see June 1, Stuxnet Revealed) and Duqu. There is even a search engine, Shodan, that allows anyone to search for specific computer hardware that is connected to the internet at a in a specific geographic location. This makes targeting infrastructure easy.
The antivirus firm Kaspersky Labs is working to address this problem by developing a secure operating system designed specifically for critical infrastructure. The software is being designed from scratch with security in mind. It is being kept simple to assure there will not be any built in vulnerabilities and is designed to not allow behind the scenes, undeclared code execution.
